New 2,4-D label instructions to reduce spray drift incidents

As of 4th October 2018, the the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has implemented new instructions to mitigate the risk of spray drift, which restrict the application of 2,4-D herbicides. In order for these new instructions to be in place, all current 2,4-D labels will be cancelled and the use of 2,4-D will be through a permit. The permit will stay in place until the conclusion of the current 2,4-D review.

Note that users of 2,4-D must now comply with the new label instructions, even if they are using products with the old labels.

What you need to know:

  • The full instructions can be found here https://apvma.gov.au/node/32941
  • Do not spray when a surface temperature inversion is present
  • Applicators must now use at least a Very Coarse (VC) spray quality
  • When using a boom sprayer, boom heights must be 0.5m or lower above the target canopy
  • Downwind buffers now apply (typically less than 50m, subject to rate and product being applied) between application sites, downwind sensitive crops and environmentally sensitive aquatic areas
  • Additional record keeping is required. Operators need to update spray records, with greater detail, within 24 hours of application and keep these records for a minimum of two years.
  • The APVMA has issued permit PER 87174 “The New Instructions” to allow persons to possess, have custody of, supply, and/or use 2,4-D products currently on farm and in retail outlets. Supply at the point of retail sale must occur with the new instructions being provided with each container supplied. A copy of the permit can be found >> here.

The new requirements do not change or restrict other aspects of the currently approved use patterns and should not affect availability of the product. Products containing 2,4-D continue to be under review by the APVMA.

What does this mean to our customers?

  • For products made on or after 1 November 2018, updated labels will be on all products containing 2,4-D coming from suppliers.
  • For products made prior to 1 November 2018, we can supply you a copy of the new instructions.  Contact your local branch to arrange.
