Keep a lookout. Fall army worm is about.
Farmers across the region are urged to be on the lookout for signs of damage and the presence of Fall Armyworm larvae in summer crops. This insect pest is a serious threat to a wide range of crops including maize, grain sorghum, rice, cotton, vegetables and sugar cane.
The pest was first detected in NSW in September 2020 north of Moree. Subsequent detections were made in Narrabri, Wee Waa, Dubbo, Breeza and Maitland in October 2020 and this week detected in Inverell. It is anticipated that the pest could greatly impact NSW summer cropping as they move down into NSW from northern states.
Growers in the Macintyre, Gwydir, Namoi, Hunter Valley and Northern Rivers regions are urged to be on high alert for signs of Fall Armyworm laying in and damaging crops. Early detection and reporting are key elements in controlling this pest and minimizing the major crop damage they can cause. Be on the lookout and contact your local Agronomist if you have any concerns.
