Spray Wise This Summer: Keep the Spray on the Weeds
Did you know spray drift can cause serious problems for summer crops across Australia – damaging neighbouring paddocks, reducing yields, and even harming the environment?
This summer, make sure your spray stays where it should: on the weeds.
Every chemical user has legal responsibilities when it comes to safe and effective spraying. Following the right practices doesn’t just keep you compliant – it protects your crop, your neighbours, and your community.
Here are a few key reminders:
- Check your accreditation. Anyone applying chemicals in NSW needs a current AQF3 certificate. Contractors also need to be licensed by the EPA or Biosecurity Queensland.
- Talk to your neighbours. Let them know your spraying plans and check for nearby sensitive crops at crop.satamap.com.au.
- Keep your records straight. In NSW, keep spray records for 3 years; in Queensland, for 2 years.
- Choose wisely. Match your product, nozzle, and spray quality to the conditions, and always follow label directions.
- Watch the weather. Spray only when wind speeds are between 3–15 km/h, and avoid early morning or night-time inversions.
Remember: conditions change fast. Check wind direction and speed before, during, and after spraying to avoid off-target drift.
